Walk, Run, Or Bike? Help Make Roads Safer

If you walk, run, or ride a bicycle in Roanoke – even if it’s recreationally – the City of Roanoke wants your feedback.

The National Highway Safety Transportation Board selected Roanoke to pilot a Community-Based Bicyclist and Pedestrian Safety Assessment. This assessment will complement crash data and help identify trends and patterns that can be targeted with engineering, enforcement, and educational countermeasures.

All that adds up to more realistic data for planning and implementing transportation improvements.

Typically before adding new street amenities, like bike lanes, transportation planners consider safety measurements, predominantly relying on crash data. While pedestrian and bicyclist crashes are, fortunately, infrequent in Roanoke, they are also often under-reported. Further, near misses, which could be happening on a more frequent basis, are also rarely reported. This small set of data doesn’t give planners an accurate picture of what types of unsafe conditions pedestrians and bicyclists might experience on a day-to-day basis.

Your participation in this survey will help the City of Roanoke identify areas where infrastructure improvements could help make Roanoke an even safer place to walk and ride a bike.
