Share Your Thoughts on the A.T. Pedestrian Bridge

Here’s your chance to weigh in on what the McAfee Knob pedestrian bridge will look like.

The McAfee Knob section of the Appalachian Trail is extremely popular with hikers but poses a safety concern as pedestrians entering the trail from the nearby parking lot must cross Route 311 at a location in a curve with limited sight lines for pedestrians and motorists.

As a long-term improvement to enhance pedestrian safety, VDOT has been working with stakeholders to fund and install a pedestrian bridge across Route 311.

The bridge will allow hikers to cross above the road rather than dodging cars in a blind turn.

A date has not been set for construction, but it is anticipated to begin in fall 2024.

But for now, VDOT is seeking public input on the bridge design, primarily whether you prefer the metal or concrete stairs option. However, you are encouraged to share whatever comments or suggestions you may have. For example, we feel strongly that “outdoor art” should be incorporated into the bridge design (e.g. silhouette of mountains and hikers) so we’re letting them know.

You have until Saturday, July 18 to comment. Learn more about the project and see 3D rendering.
