Attention outdoor-loving folks. We need your help.

The Roanoke Outside Foundation, in partnership with Roanoke Parks and Recreation and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia, is expanding its outdoor mentoring program to connect more children to the outdoors.

The Outdoor Adventure Club provides 12 months of outdoor activities for under-served youth, ages 11-13. With one-on-one mentoring we are able to eliminate barriers to the outdoors for youth regardless of a family’s financial situation, fostering engagement with nature, stewardship, and community.

Outdoor adventures include the following group activities:

  • October: Hiking
  • November: Rock Climbing
  • December: Caving
  • January: Snowshoeing
  • February: Frozen Waterfall Hike
  • March: Snow Skiing/Tubing
  • April: Mountain Biking
  • May: Canoeing- Flat Water
  • June: River Tubing
  • July: Canoeing- River
  • August: Wilderness Survival Skills
  • October: End-of-the-Year Campout

This program is made possible by grants from Keen Effect and The North Face Explorers funds.

Get Involved

We need mentors to get this thing off the ground. Many of you stepped up for our Outdoor Mentor Program (for ages 8-10) and this is an opportunity for those that wanted to get involved but did not for some reason. (The Outdoor Mentor Program is still going strong with 20 big-little pairs playing outside this summer.)

All applications run through Big Brothers Big Sisters; activities start in September, but the time to apply is now.
