Real Events Happening in June (Bike or Run)

The Alleghany Highlands has back-to-back events for those ready to get their competitive juices flowing IRL.

Agony in the Alleghanies

June 20, Covington and Clifton Forge

The gran fondo bike event with four distance options ranging from 30 miles to 103 miles.

  • The Medio Mountain, is a 64-mile race filled with over 6,000 feet climbing throughout. Racers will be forced to tackle the Warm Springs Mountain climb, as well as many other climbs. If you are looking for a medium-length course, full of intense, leg-burning mountains, this is the course for you.
  • The overall distance of the Medio Fondo is almost identical to the Medio Mountain at 69 miles but will have nearly 200 fewer feet climbing, making it a perfect mix of distance and climbing.
  • The shortest and flattest course available is the Piccolo Fondo. It stretches 30 miles, with only 2,200 feet climbing. The first half of the race is a long, slow climb, but is all downhill once you reach the 18-mile mark. The Piccolo is perfect for beginners and young riders.
  • The hardest and most demanding course is the Gran Fondo. It stretches 103 has almost 10,000 feet climbing! This course is not to be taken lightly and is most definitely not for the faint of heart. Only extremely experienced riders should tackle the Grand Fondo, although any rider brave enough is more than welcome to try.

Jackson River Scenic Trail Marathon

June 27, Intervale Trail Head on the Jackson River Scenic Trail

If you haven’t had a chance to experience the Jackson River Scenic Trail (quite possibly one of the most beautiful in the area) the time is now. The Jackson River Marathon also includes half marathon, 10k, and 5k options.

The Jackson River Scenic Trail follows the Jackson River, stretching 14.4 miles from Intervale to the Alleghany/Bath County line. The trail follows an old railroad bed of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, and passes through small communities, cultivated fields, and small patches of woodland along the way.
