Pete’s Pick: Cheer on the Runners

While everyone thinks of runners when it comes to race day, there’s so much more to an event such as the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon.

Even if the only running you’ll ever do is when you are being chased, you should make plans to join the fun on April 22.

Come out and cheer on runners in your neighborhood or at a favorite spot along the course. Your hospitality is one of the reasons so many people travel from all over the country to participate in this race.

Here’s a review from MarathonGuide:

“This is a top-notch event – it’s a gorgeous, very challenging course and the race organizers and volunteers are outstanding. The race director stands at the finish for hours and greets each finisher with a handshake or high five. The locals are also great – the community is extremely supportive. Many residents offer encouragement and treats and some even thank runners for coming to Roanoke to run ‘our marathon’. I’ve run the BRM 5 times, look forward to it each year, and rave about it to anyone who will listen! :)” – J.S. (Maryland)

If music and food are more up your alley, make plans to cheer on runners as they cross the finish line at the finish festival. There will be live music at Elmwood Park beginning at 9 a.m. as part of the Ballast Point Down by Downtown music festival and plenty of vendors to talk to, an Earth Day festival, plenty of food and craft beer. (I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday morning.)

Be on the lookout for runners all weekend. Take note of their race shirts or medals and congratulate them on the finish. Take a minute to ask where they are from and welcome runners to Roanoke!
