Mountain Bike Racing for the Little Ones

One of the best ways to create a lifelong love for the outdoors is to start early.

The Fishburn Youth Mountain Biking Race Series is a great – and free – way to get kids on bikes in a fun and friendly environment.

The series is aimed at novice riders from ages 2 to 14. Riders will compete on a short, spectator-friendly course against youth their own age and skill level. Medals will be awarded to the top three boys and girls in each age group. On-site registration opens on the race dates (July 12 and July 19) at the lower Fishburn Park shelter at 4:30 p.m.

It’s also a lot of fun to watch. (The races for the 2- to 4-year-olds are a real hoot with kids on balance bikes.)

The event, which is put on by Roanoke Parks and Recreation, East Coasters Bike Shop, and Star City Cycling is in its sixth year and participation is free. Kids can compete in one event or the whole series.
