Poverty Creek (also known as Pandapas Pond) is one of the area’s premier destinations for single-track mountain biking.

More than 20 miles of trail options, with steep climbs and fast downhills, will keep your heart pounding. There are 17 total trails in the trail system, and it is located right on the border Montgomery and Giles county border.


  • There is a total of 20 miles of trails, with the longest being the 7.2-mile Poverty Creek Trail.

Hike It, Bike It

  • Most trails are easy to intermediate, however, be sure to check the trail conditions to see if it is too muddy to ride or hike (especially the Poverty Creek Trail).
  • The park is available sunrise to sunset, and there is no fee to use it. Open season is all year around, and there are vault toilets at the trailhead.
  • Fishing ponds are available.


  • From Roanoke, take I-81 S to exit 118 B to US-460 W. Continue on 460 W for 11 miles where you will exit on Prices Fork Rd.
  • Turn right onto SR 652 for .5 miles and then turn onto SR 718 for 1.7 mi. Turn left onto SR 655 for half a mile and then turn right into SE 725 for approximately a mile. Take a slight left to stay on SR 725 and continue to the trail site.
  • Parking is available at the trailhead.

Add-On Adventures

  • Float the New River in many different locations throughout the surrounding area and enjoy all that the New River Valley has to offer.
  • Poverty Creek Trail is fairly secluded, but it is not too far away from Blacksburg and Virginia Tech, where you can tour the region’s largest university and catch a sports game for whatever teams are in season.
  • Check out Beliveau Estate Winery, located between Salem and Blacksburg.

    Bull & Bones Brewhaus and Grill is a locally-owned brewpub with both an upscale dining room and a separate sports bar with a casual dining area. The brewpub is located in “First and Main” in Blacksburg on South Main Street. Fresh lager and ale is handcrafted and served on site and the brewery is visible through glass walls throughout the restaurant.

  • Rising Silo Farm Brewery Expand Collapse

    The brewery is currently operating with a 3-barrel brewing system on site at the farm. Each batch is crafted with great care and attentiveness. The tasting room is open for various events throughout the week.

    The River Company operates a 10 barrel direct fired Diversified Metal Engineering brew system. The brewery offers up to eight draft beers at any time. These are a mixture of year round offerings and special beers that the brewer dreams up.

    The Bike Barn is a locally-owned, full-service road and mountain bike sales and repair shop, offering anything from a minor tuneup to a full overhaul.  Bike Barn also rents comfort and hybrid bikes.

    Since 1984, the Greenhouse Boardshop has served the needs of people who ride skateboards and snowboards. Two locations — Roanoke and Blacksburg — are dedicated to promoting our sports in a variety of ways such as fundraising and constructing our local skate parks, hosting professional demos and contests, and by keeping our doors open for anyone to come in and hang out.

    The Snow Club at Virginia Tech is open to student and non-student members. Membership comes with perks such as discounted ski passes, trips, giveaways, discounts at local shops, and more.

    Tangent Outfitters offers canoe and tube rentals for the New River as well as half-day, full-day, and overnight trips, guided fishing trips and canoe and mountain biking combination adventures.

    TriAdventure Multisport Coaching & Fitness is a coaching organization committed to introducing beginners to the great sport of triathlon, and improving the fitness and performance of the endurance athlete. Triathlon and endurance training programs allow TriAdventure to offer a variety of fitness and endurance options, including strength and conditioning, swim, bike, run, and nutrition counseling for better health and peak performance.

    TriAdventure supports a number of regional endurance events such as the Hell Climb 10K, TriAdventure Summer Sprint Tri, and Monster of a Metric Cycling Challenge.

  • Virginia Tech Climbing Club Expand Collapse

    The Virginia Tech Climbing Club is a student organization dedicated to helping people of all skill levels experience the joy of climbing. The club provides opportunities to meet other climbers, see what other people are climbing, clinics to demonstrate skills climbers need, and organizes trips to get out on the rock. Club meetings are open to anyone who would like to come.

    Venture Out provides fun, safe, and educational outdoor services to Virginia Tech students, faculty, staff, and the community of Blacksburg.

    The organization specializes in exciting outdoor adventures, quality rental gear at unbeatable rates, and valuable resources to help you plan the perfect adventure. Venture Out offers extensive outdoor resources on local, regional, and national recreation opportunities. We have a variety of brochures and books on hiking, backpacking, and camping in the New River Valley including information on all of the Virginia State Parks and National Forest.
