Ironman Needs You

Part of the course is set for the Carilion Clinic Ironman 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge in June.

The swim will happen at Carvins Cove and the running route is along the Roanoke River Greenway, but the optimal bike route for the race needs your help. The National Park Service must approve a permit that would allow closures along the Blue Ridge Parkway for the bike portion of the race.

You can help make it happen by commenting on the project with your support of approval of the permit. All you have to do it visit the NPS website and enter your contact information along with a note of support. (Easy peasy!)

Ironman announced earlier this year that the Roanoke Region will serve as a multi-year host venue for the Carilion Clinic Ironman 70.3 Virginia’s Blue Ridge triathlon. The first event in the series is June 7.

Registration is open and several tiers have already sold out. The race offers 40 qualifying slots to the 2020 Ironman 70.3 World Championships in New Zealand.

Here’s what the organizers say about this region’s version of the race: “This course offers everything an athlete could want. From a clear, warm swim in Carvins Cove Reservoir, a bike course that navigates through the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and shaded run alone the Roanoke River Greenway, athletes can count on the perfect course.”

You can help make that happen with support of the NPS permit. Comments supporting the permit for the bike portion of the race need to be submitted by Nov. 22.
