Run for the Holiday Lights (or Cookies)

The holiday running season is in full effect with a handful of races and fun runs that will get you feeling holly jolly and work up a sweat.

Join any or all of these events to get in the holiday spirit. Many of these routes and events are free, but organizers are asking that you RSVP. Happy holidays!

Jingle Bell Run

Saturday, Dec. 14, 9 a.m. at Patrick Henry Hotel: Put on your favorite holiday costume; tie jingle bells to your shoelaces. The race is open for runners and walkers, and 100 percent of registration fees and fundraising efforts go to the Arthritis Foundation. Learn more.

Holiday Lights Run/Walk Tour

Wednesday, Dec. 18, 6:30 p.m. in Grandin Village: Wear your best festive lights and costumes and bring the family to this free event (but please register) mapping up to three miles of walking or running through residential streets of Grandin Village. Arrive early to enjoy hot chocolate (thanks to 7-Eleven), visit with friends, snag a group photo, then take off to see the lights. Learn more.

Holiday Cookie Run

Saturday, Dec. 21, 8:30 a.m. at Hollins University Dining Hall: Trail run or walk the Tinker Creek Greenway to Carvins Cove boat docks and back to Hollins. No entry fee, just bring homemade cookies to share. Learn more.

Johnny CASA 5 Miler and 5K

Saturday, Dec. 21, 9 a.m., 300 South Main Street in Rocky Mount: Family-oriented, superhero-themed race offers a course that challenges distance runners with scenic vistas of historic Rocky Mount for runners and walkers. Learn more.

10th Annual Christmas Eve Fun Run and Walk

Tuesday, Dec. 24, noon at Vic Thomas Park (behind Black Dog Salvage): Run or walk the 3 mile or 1 mile course. Kid’s Fun run option for the little ones. No t-shirts, no timing, no entry fee; and all you need to bring is a smile. Cookies for all and maybe some prizes, too. Learn more.
