Professional cyclists from around the country will come to the Roanoke Region for a shot at a $10,000 total purse at the two-day C2 UCI and USA Cycling season opener.

Virginia’s Blue Ridge GO Cross presented by Deschutes Brewery will be at Fallon Park in Roanoke on Aug. 31-Sept. 1.

Spectators and riders that attended the 2018 events were blown away by the professionalism and scale of the first time UCI event. Kerry Werner, 2018 first-place elite male finisher, went on to represent the U.S. at the world championship race.

The race attracts top racers from around the world and showcases the sport of cyclocross in the Mid-Atlantic.

“It’s a huge deal to have a UCI race on the official international cycling calendar,” said Pete Eshelman, director of the Roanoke Outside Foundation. “We doubled the number of racers we hosted from 2017 to 2018 and we hope to continue this trajectory in 2019.”

The cyclocross style of racing is designed to entertain rowdy crowds with epic wipe outs and heckling is encouraged. “In-field” activities include a Deschutes Brewery craft beer garden, food trucks, kitschy yard games, bike and related vendors, and prize drawings from Trek Bikes and East Coasters Bike Shop.
