Fund Some Tunnel Art

Tunnel Art Project

The tunnel from Evans Mill to Wiley Drive is used by people looking to access Rivers Edge Park as well as the Roanoke River Greenway. This tunnel is often viewed as “creepy” and is frequently tagged with graffiti, making a poor impression on those heading into a premier park and greenway system.

Studies have shown that murals in public spaces drastically reduce unwanted graffiti as well as create a more welcoming environment – and building a more welcoming community is a part of the Roanoke Parks and Recreation mission.

Roanoke Outside is helping Roanoke Parks and Recreation raise funds to paint a 3-D river scene in which users are “floating” through the tunnel into the park.

The budget for this project is $10,000 which includes cleaning, repairing, and prepping the surfaces for painting and to pay the artist for their time and work.
