Start Your Summer: #FirstDayofSummer Photo Contest
Summer is coming!
The first day of summer is June 21, the longest solar day of the year. Join Roanoke Outside for the #FirstDayofSummer Photo Contest, an all-day event celebrating the start of the season by sharing photographs of your outdoor activities and start your summer outside.
The sun rises on the solstice at 5:59 a.m. and sets at 8:43 p.m., but everybody’s day is different. So, from midnight to 11:59 p.m. on June 21, post your photographs on Instagram with the hashtags #RoanokeOutside and #FirstDayofSummer. The photos don’t have to be from that day — although it is encouraged — but must be posted during that period to join the buzz. You can post as many as photos as you want for more chances to win prizes!
Ten participants will be randomly selected to win a prize contributed by one of our event sponsors, just some of the many businesses in the Roanoke Region that you can always rely on to help make your adventures memorable. Prizes include hats, gift cards, and more. The 10 winning participants will be announced the following day (June 22) and will be contacted via Instagram.
So, pick up your camera or your phone, and any other gear you might need, and get outside – then show us your adventure via Instagram on June 21. It doesn’t need to be extravagant, and you don’t need to be a professional to participate or win.
Take your dog to the park, head to your nearest nature trail, go play at Roaring Run or bike up Mill Mountain to see the view from the Star. And if you’re looking for ideas, check out Create an Adventure to explore all kinds of outdoor opportunities near you.

- You MUST tag ALL photographs with #RoanokeOutside and #FirstDayofSummer.
- Post as many photographs of your outdoor activities as you’d like.
- Photographs must be posted between midnight and 11:59 p.m. (EST) on June 21, 2018.
- Winners will be selected randomly from all entries and announced on June 22. Winners will receive notification via Instagram and have 30 days to claim their prize.
