Build Your Own Worm Composting Bin

Are you looking to do something with your hands, as well as help the environment by being a little more green? Then you should try building your own worm composting bin.

What is Worm Composting?

Worm composting is the process of using worms to recycle food scraps into a soil betterment called vermicompost, or worm compost. It is a natural process, and it provides worms with constant nutrients, as well as produces a very useful, nutritious fertilizer.

How Does it Work?

Worms eat any leftover food you feed them, and as it passes through the body of the worm, the digestive system turns the scrap into a compost. The byproduct of worm composting is a fantastic plant fertilizer, and also provides a way of disposing of those unwanted scraps that you have no other use for.

In this class for adults put on by Roanoke Parks and Recreation, you will learn to plan and build a worm composting bin, and each participant will go home with a fully operational worm composting kit. You can use this bin to dispose of and decompose food scraps such as fruit and vegetable peels, egg shells, tea bags, and coffee grounds.

All materials and supplies will be provided. No previous experience is required, and any skill level builder is allowed.
