Blue Ridge Marathon Sweeps Race Categories in Best of Blue Ridge

Over 60,000 people voted and the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon swept all three race categories in the 2021 “Best of the Blue Ridge” contest by Blue Ridge Outdoors Magazine readers.

  • Best Running Event 13.1+ Miles
  • Toughest Race
  • Race Most Missed in 2020

As for the last category, runners showed their love for the event after it was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic through continued support.

Julia Boas, events director for the Roanoke Outside Foundation, said almost a third of 2020 race participants chose to donate their race entries instead of running virtually or deferring to 2021.

“I do think that speaks to the people and how committed they are to the race and to the foundation,” she said. “We got a lot of supportive notes and people writing about how important they think everything we’re doing is.”

Boas said the plan is for an in-person event on April 17 with a virtual option that includes elevation gain requirements.

Thanks to all who voted. And even more thanks to those who continue to support our small, non-profit event throughout this pandemic.
