Access to the Upper James River Water Trail Just Got Easier

gala river accessThanks to your continued support of Roanoke Outside and our mission to continually improve access to the outdoors, we were able to contribute $5,000 to help Botetourt County improve the Gala access point on the James River.

A new concrete ramp makes it easy for boats of all kinds to access the James River.

Ready to take advantage of this new outdoor asset?

Get out and float!

Start or finish at the Gala access point/boat ramp. If you put in upstream at the Glen Wilton access point, you’ll enjoy a 7.5-mile float (about 3-4 hours) with Class I rapids and a Class II rapid (called the Squeeze), before taking out at the Gala access point. If you’re looking for a shorter float you start at Gala and float four miles (about 1-2 hours) downstream to where Craig Creek merges with the James River.
