Come climb aboard the covered wagon for a ride through the pristine beauty of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains at Virginia's Explore Park located at milepost 115 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The covered wagon is pulled by big draft mules, Lester & Festus, who love their work. Explore Park is a unique outdoor museum and visiting the park is a memorable and educational experience. Spiritriders staff loves the history that Explore Park offers. Travel back in time as you walk through the 19th Century Village and marvel at the extraordinary historic cabins, barn, blacksmith shop, one room school house and the old grist mill. Enjoy the majesty of the beautiful Roanoke River, which runs through Explore Park for two miles. This is breathtaking country and Spiritriders invites you to come experience it with us and your family and friends.

When you come to visit Explore Park and Spiritriders, bring your appetite! Spiritriders offers a full catered meal at the Saturday evening event. On Friday nights and Sunday afternoons a lighter meal is offered. The food is prepared by Roanoke’s finest who take pride in preparing homemade bread, hearty side dishes and extraordinary barbeque. Reservations are a must as we take pride in offering great meals in a remote area, so planning is a necessity.

Historic narration is a part your experience the on Friday, Saturday and Sunday venues. Spiritriders’ outrider, Susan C. Hall is well versed in the real life character she portrays. Susan brings knowledge and enthusiasm to her narration. Her musical renditions of traditional tunes are always enjoyed by the folks who leave wanting more of her spunk and talent. Susan is also available for private parties and functions.

Ladies of the Lake is a group of three well seasoned women with big voices, great musicality and a love of Explore Park and history. They perform every Saturday night during our 4 hour event. Their costumes reflect a time in history in keeping with the 19th Century Village. These women are fun, highly gifted and just simply fun to listen to. As guests of Spiritriders you will hear some great ole’ time tunes that will bring a smile to your face. This group is also available for Spiritriders private functions and events.

  • Friday nights and Sunday afternoon Adults: $26 Kids Ages 7-15: $18 Kids 6 and under (please call to discuss meal options}
  • Saturday Evening $55 per adult, Kids 7-15: $25. Kids under 6 (please call to discuss meal options)

Explore Park Trail System
Explore Park, located off the Blue Ridge Parkway (milepost 115), is a 1,100-acre preserve situated along the Roanoke River Gorge with a variety of hiking options. Six trail options ranging from <0.5 miles to >10 miles, many of which are loop trails. Trails range form easy to difficult and are only 10 minutes from downtown Roanoke.
