Summer is Perfect for Tubing on the Pigg River

Nothing says summer like warm days and a float on the river. The Pigg River in Franklin County features mostly calm water with a few sections of ripples for an adventure that the whole family will enjoy.

You can put in at three different locations and even rent tubes at Waid Park. (Even better is that the floats are designed so that there’s no need for a shuttle to get back thanks to a great S-curve in the river.)

  • The Upper put-in allows for up to 1 mile of floating. It will take approximately 5-10 minutes to walk to the access point with a 45-minute float to the lower bridge.
  • The Middle put-in allows for a ½ mile float. It will take approximately 5 minutes to walk to the access point with a 30-minute float to the lower bridge.
  • The Lower put-in allows for a 1/4 mile float. The put-in is directly adjacent the tube rentals shelter. It will take approximately 20 minutes to float this section.

Here’s what you need to know before you arrive.

Waid Park rentals, which is operated by Franklin County Parks and Recreation, is open from noon to 6 p.m. (SATURDAYS ONLY) all summer; rentals are $2 for an hour or $5 for the day. Tubing is allowed for any age, but minors can’t rent tubes.

Before you go:

  • Bring shoes that you don’t mind wearing in the water. Rocks and grasses can be slick and you’ll want shoes with some grip. Plus, some areas can get pretty shallow and you will walk back after the float.
  • There is a restroom and changing area at the Tube Rentals Building so you can change into dry clothes for the ride home.
  • Life jackets are provided with tube rentals, so you don’t have to bring extra gear.
  • Pack a lunch. There are picnic tables and a playground near the tubing take-out area.
