Cold water float on the Smith River below Philpott Dam. Class II water with a dam release. Perhaps the best option for play waves in southern Virginia during the late summer.
One of the very few dependable floats in Southside Virginia, the Smith River below Philpott features 40 degree water and a couple nice Class II play waves. Put-in at the base of Philpott Dam and take-outs placed about every six miles downstream.
Lots of options on the Smith River for all paddling levels as the river slows as it winds through Henry County. This is the best brown trout fishery in Virginia, if not the mid-Atlantic.
Super scenery with massive rhodies. Also check out the fog that forms on warm, humid days as the cold water reacts with the air. there are times when you can't see 30 feet in front of your boat. Totally unique paddling experience in Virginia.
