Slackline Sunday Is for You and the Kids

Introduce the family to slacklining.

You may have seen them at festivals or other events – the tightrope-like line a few inches from the ground that people try walking across – but have you mastered the art of the slackline?

Every Sunday from 5 to 8 p.m., test your balance skills and learn new tricks at The River Rock. Admission to Slackline Sunday is just $10 and includes a pass to climb as well (plus rental gear if you need it). You have the choice to climb or play on the slackline.

The nice thing about this event is that you can practice indoors while it is cold out and there’s no learning curve. The activity is versatile, fun for all ages, and you can make it as easy or as tough as you like.

Beginners might just learn balance while walking across the line. More advanced slackers might include hops, skips, or flips or increase the height of the line.

Here are a few tips for starters (so you are ready to go when you get to the climbing gym):

  • Do a few stretches to warm up and loosen your muscles.
  • Start with one leg on the line and put most of your weight on it.
  • Then slowly bring the other leg up.
  • Stay in one location until you feel balanced.
  • Move your arms around without walking and keep your footing.
  • Find something to watch ahead of you and take small steps forward.
  • Repeat!
