Pete’s Pick: Wilderness First Aid Course

If you’re spending any time outside you need to take a wilderness first aid course.

The two-day class (May 19-20 at Camp Roanoke) will help you learn how to save a life or be prepared in wilderness areas, rural areas, at a disaster site, or during travel. The program addresses how to provide emergency care in a setting where access to medical professionals might not be immediate.

You’ll get hands-on experience in a setting with classroom instruction, question and answer sessions, and practical work, and problem-solving exercises. You come away with actual do-it-yourself care-giving confidence.

You don’t need any prior knowledge or experience to attend and classes come with SOLO WFA certification and counts as recertification for WFA, AWFA, WFR, and the wilderness part of W-EMT.

Topics include: Wilderness/remote travel/disaster-delayed EMS arrival injury challenges and long-term patient care, patient assessment, treating injuries such as sprains, strains, fractures, and spinal cord management, how to treat contusions, abrasions, and lacerations, as well as bites, stings, blisters, and burns; and more.

If you play outside, you never know when these skills might be valuable.
