Pete’s Pick: Shout Out to Outdoor Mentors and Sponsors

outdoor mentorsHere’s a little update on a project we’ve been working on this spring and summer:

You might remember me asking for help with a new program earlier this year that paired outdoor-minded folks with kids from the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Virginia program for activities in the region.

The program is up and running and I’d like to thank everyone who has touched the program in some way. In addition to all the wonderful bigs who are dedicating their time, the program would not happen without a grant from Wells Fargo, the support of Big Brothers Big Sisters, and companies that have donated gear for participants including Keen, Granite Gear, Klean Kanteen, and Columbia.

“Omar and I have had lots of adventures during the Outdoor Explorers program so far this year!” said Daniel an outdoor big, pictured with Omar at Mill Mountain Zoo. “Chasing him around and trying to keep him dry has been an unexpected, hilarious, challenge! During two outings that were not water related, we ended up in a lake once (accidently) and walking around in a river once (intentionally). Having a safely organized environment where kids can be kids, while experiencing the great outdoors, is really awesome!”

The Outdoor Explorers Mentoring Program provides children in underserved communities with access to Roanoke’s outdoor community through activities and mentorship. The year-long program includes a hiking, tubing, paddling, rock climbing, stargazing, or environmental education activity each month for children and their outdoor-minded mentors.
