Pete’s Pick: Region’s Outdoor Scene Keeps Making the News

This week, I’d like to suggest a little something different. While I’d like you to get outside, I’d also encourage you to talk about the outdoors.

  1. Do a little reading (suggestions follow)
  2. Tell everyone about the great things people are saying about the region

The Roanoke Region has gotten quite a bit of national media coverage lately … and most of it is centered on our happening outdoors scene.

Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Men’s Journal: Magazine names Roanoke one of the 20 best mountain towns in America, noting the great mountain biking courses, the Blue Ridge Marathon, and hiking the Triple Crown on the Appalachian Trail.
  • DirtRag: A rider new to the region takes on the trails at Dragon’s Back. Here’s a glimpse of her ride: “The 1,300 foot descent was steep, fast and loose. It was easy to exponentially gain speed – and also probably far too easy to go flying into the woods if you couldn’t slow down in time for the switchbacks that littered the descent. I emerged onto the road with a grin plastered on my face.”
  • Carilion Medicine: Carilion Clinic launches a wilderness medicine fellowship in response to the region’s popularity as an outdoor destination (page 26).
  • Kuhl: Website editors ask: “Is Roanoke the best up-and-coming MTB destination in the Southeast?” and we say “of course it is!”
