Pete’s Pick: Planning to Paddle? Start with a Safety Class

If you are like other outdoor lovers, some of your summer plans might include getting out on the water. Start the summer off right with a class to help you see potential water hazards and how to enjoy the great outdoors while staying safe.

The Paddle Sports Safety Class is being taught by Carilion Clinic with instructors from the American Canoe Association.

Expect to learn:

  • How to prepare for a river trip.
  • Manage personal safety and personal protective equipment.
  • Manage basic self-rescue techniques.
  • Identify and respond to moving water hazards such as strainers, sieves, and hydraulics.

This class is for:

  • Everyone who kayaks, canoes, or SUPs.
  • Everyone who is interested in spending time on rivers or creeks.
  • Everyone who enjoys going on commercial rafting trips.

Each class lasts three hours and will be at the Kayak Launch on Reserve Avenue. Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes and clothes that can get wet. Kayaks, canoes, and SUPs are not provided and attendees are encouraged NOT to bring their own. The Paddle Sports Safety Class focuses on personal safety after entering moving water without a watercraft.

Class dates are May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, Aug. 9, and Aug. 23. Learn more and register online in advance.
