Pete’s Pick: Lake Moomaw Open Water Swim

Lake Moomaw

The Lake Moomaw 1 Mile Open Water Swim is back on Saturday, Aug. 5, and it’s not too late to get in on the action (or just make plans to cheer on swimmers). This is a pretty cool event for swimmers and spectators. The scenery is beautiful and the swim is a one-of-a-kind experience in the Alleghany Highlands. It’s something that anyone who can swim a mile in under an hour can do.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • The start (9 a.m.) and finish is on the beach at Cole’s Point, clearly visible to spectators and race personnel.
  • The course runs along the shore to the south, approximately 50 yards out and continues east and north around buoys that will be clearly visible.
  • Swimmers will reach the turn-around point inside the “no wake zone” in the inlet and turn counter- clockwise around a buoy and swim back to the beach via the same route. (Buoys will remain to the swimmers’ left.)
  • Swimmers will depart from the beach in waves of 10 people or fewer, 1 minute apart.
  • You can register online through Thursday, Aug. 3 (must be 18 or older).
