Pete’s Pick: Go on a Hike with the Family

Saturday is a holiday that we can all appreciate – Family Hiking Day. family-hike-roanoke

The event is in collaboration with National Public Lands Day and was developed by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy to encourage people of all ages and experience levels to visit the A.T. and participate in a day of outdoor activity. The event includes more than 30 guided hikes in 13 states, including four in the Roanoke Region:

  • Sawtooth Ridge A.T. Hike: Easy, 2 miles; meets at 311 Parking Lot, McAfee Knob Trailhead at 10 a.m. Hosted by RATC; email kherndon@appalachiantrail.org to reserve your spot.
  • Tinker Ridge A.T. Hike: Strenuous, 4 miles; meet at the Park and Ride lot off 220 at 10:30 a.m. Hosted by RATC; email mattallenbaugh@gmail.com to reserve your spot.
  • Fisherman’s Trail/Roanoke River Trail: Moderate, 1 mile; meets at Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 114.9 at 10 a.m. Hosted by Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway; email Roanoke@friendsbrp.org to reserve your spot.
  • Mill Mountain Loop Hike: Easy/moderate, 1.5 miles; meets at Mill Mountain Discovery Center at 2 p.m. Hosted by PLAY Roanoke; email christine.elder@roanokeva.gov to reserve your spot.
