Parkway Cleanup Will Help Showcase Region to Runners

Let’s make the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon course shine.

Volunteers are needed for a few cleanup days to make sure the course looks perfectly stunning as people come from all over the country to run this scenic race. It’s a fun group activity with family and friends. And it’s for a good cause – beautifying our beloved Blue Ridge Parkway. It’s a source of personal and community pride. And it’s great exercise, too!

The cleanups, which are sponsored by race beneficiary FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway, are happening the next few Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

  • March 25: Meet at Gum Spring Overlook and fan out on Roanoke Mountain. John Carlin is scheduled to videotape a marathon promo featuring the volunteers.
  • April 1: Meet at Chestnut Ridge Overlook and fan out along Mill Mountain Parkway. Patrick Henry Honor Society and Hidden Valley students will join the FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway crew.
  • April 8: Meet at the J.P. Fishburn and Mill Mountain Parkway junction and fan out. Cheer on the Mountain Junkies trail runners!
  • April 15 (tentative): Meet at Chestnut Ridge Overlook for a final sweep from J.P. Fishburn, along Mill Mountain Parkway and around Roanoke Mountain.

Volunteers should wear comfortable clothes, long pants, closed-toe shoes, work gloves and bug spray. Bring water. Trash bags, water, snacks, spare gloves and some trash grabbers will be supplied.
