Appalachian Trail - Overnight Backpacking Loop

This overnight backpacking trips begins and ends at the Rt. 311 ATC trail head.  Hike North on AT, pass McAfee Knob, turn left down Andy Layne Trail, cross to North Mountain Trail, hike South to Rt. 311, cross Rt. 311 and hike up to Dragon's Tooth, continue North on AT back to Rt. 311 parking lot.

This is a difficult hike totalling about 32 miles.

There are several AT Shelters along the first section (McAfee Knob) that you can utilize...after that it is primitive tent camping wherever you find a relatively flat spot.

Suggest Itinerary:

  • First night - just hike in a little ways to one of the first shelters.
  • Second night - camp at the bottom of Andy Layne Trail - near Rt. 779
  • Third night - camp near Dragon's Tooth Parking lot (there is a convenience store 1/4 mile south on Rt. 311)

For more information visit the AT interactive trail map.
