National Public Lands Day is Sept. 30

National Public Lands Day is right around the corner and there are two ways you can participate – head out to a state park for a little outdoor recreation or join a volunteer opportunity.

National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 30 is the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer effort for public lands.

Here’s your opportunity to participate locally. Join fellow trail enthusiasts at Carvins Cove to work on new construction with the Rock N Roll trail. This new trail has been under construction for the past two years and will connect the Arrowhead and Schoolhouse trails on the lower loop at Carvins Cove. Lunch, trail tools, and instruction are provided by the City of Roanoke and trail crew leaders of local volunteer organizations.

The volunteer opportunity is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30 (so you’ll still have time to enjoy the outdoors in the afternoon).

Plus, to encourage people to join in and visit their public lands, NPLD is a fee-free day for all federal public lands and many state parks. Whether you volunteer on NPLD, enjoy boating, hiking, fishing, or camping, or simply learn more about your public lands and the plants and wildlife that live there, take this day to enjoy the great outdoors.
