Cobbler Mountain Trail is a hidden gem in the Mid-Atlantic offering a 5.1-mile circuit hike of excellent scenery in the Hidden Valley Recreation Area.

Parts of the 1993 post-Civil War love story “Sommersby” were filmed on location with Richard Gere and Jodie Foster.

  • 2.67 miles

Hike It, Bike It

  • Trailhead is located at the Cobbler Mountain Trail Parking Area located at the shale pit near the southern entrance to the Recreation Area.
  • Follow the blue-blazed trail which ascends to the ridge of Cobbler Mountain. Then ascend to a wooden bridge crossing Chimney Run at 0.7 miles into the hike.
  • Continue for 1.3 miles as the trail meanders along the base of Cobbler Mountain.
  • Pass through a small field with views of Warwickton, and then continue along a wetland area before descending to the intersection of the blue-blazed Muddy Run Trail.
  • Turn left on the Muddy Run trail, and after 0.1 miles cross a small wooden footbridge over Muddy Run.
  • After 0.2 miles, cross the Jackson River on a large suspension bridge and then turn left on the Jackson River Gorge Trail as it follows alongside the Jackson River downstream.
  • After 1.8 miles, turn left at the mansion onto the gravel road that crosses a low water bridge and continues back to the Recreation Area entrance.
  • Continue to follow Hidden Valley Rd for 1 mile to arrive back at the Cobbler Mountain Trail Parking Area.

Directions/Parking

From Roanoke – Take I-81 N then take Exit 150A to merge onto US-220/Cloverdale Road. Make a U-turn at US-11 N, and then continue for 34 miles. After passing through the city of Iron Gate, merge onto I-64 E. Go 1.3 miles before taking Exit 29 for VA-42 N and turn left to get on VA-42 N. Continue for 16.5 miles then turn left onto VA-39. In 13 miles turn left onto US-220 S. Continue on VA-39 W until McGuffin Road where you will turn right. When reaching Hidden Valley Road, turn left and the destination will be on the right.
