Hollins Downriver Racing Team Wins Big

Members of the Hollins University Downriver Racing Team recently brought home wins at the state and national level.

The team finished with a win at the 2012 American Canoe Association State Championships and advanced to the ACA Collegiate National Championships, where they finished third. Hollins University student Sage Otto led the team with a second-place finish in Women’s Kayaking.

The Hollins Downriver Racing Team was formed three years ago by Hollins Outdoor Program Director Jon Guy Owens. Although downriver racing is not an official university sport, the program has steadily gained popularity among students, including many that are new to the sport. The group travels to rivers all over the Southeast to meet up with teams from other universities.

The Hollins Outdoor Program exposes students to a variety of outdoor interests, from boating to hiking and backpacking to caving and skiing. There are several group activities left this semester including a bouldering trip at McAfee Knob, a trail ride, and a day hike to Dragon’s Tooth.
