Pete’s Pick: Hike in the Moonlight

full-moon-hike

The moon will be full on Sept. 16 and you have not one, but two, chances to hike under the stars.

  • Option 1: Blue Ridge Land Conservancy is offering a guided hike at Carvins Cove. Listen to the sounds of nature with a sunset over Carvins Cove and a late summer moonrise. Watch the full moon come over Tinker Mountain and listen to nearby owls. Make sure to bring a flashlight and sturdy hiking shoes. Sept. 16, 8-10 p.m.
  • Option 2: Roanoke County Parks Recreation and Tourism is sponsoring a guided hike at Explore Park during the last full moon of the summer season. Walk the trails of the park as they change from day to night, enjoy the sights and sounds unique to this time of day, and have a special bug catching activity. Finish up the hike with a campfire and s’mores. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and bring a flashlight. Sept. 16, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Each of these hikes is designed for all ages and you don’t need a lot of experience. The only choice you have to make is which hike to go on.

Make it a great weekend … outside!
