Kids need more dirt in their life, or so we think. These clubs and organizations will ensure your kids get less screen time and more time with Mother Nature. From adventure clubs to camps to one-times events, there is something happening to get your kids outside — and off the couch — almost every day of the week (even in the rain).

  • Blue Ridge Horse Force Expand Collapse

    The mission of the Blue Ridge Horse Force is to promote grassroots showmanship and sportsmanship by uniting local open horse shows. BRHF shows are held by organizations ranging from 4-H groups to civic leagues to training stables to charitable organizations. All are able to raise more funds for their groups through increased BRHF member participation. Exhibitors can compete at any of these shows knowing that there will be uniformity in class descriptions and offerings.

  • Boy Scouts of America Blue Ridge Mountains Council Expand Collapse

    Scouting is about building character, developing personal fitness, and learning leadership and citizenship. These goals are achieved in the outdoors. The adventure of hiking, camping, swimming, boating, high-adventure challenges, and touring is woven into the scouting program.

    • Cub Scouts: First through fifth grades (seven to 10 years old)
    • Boy Scouting: Ages 11-17, program of fun outdoor activities, peer group leadership opportunities and a personal exploration of career, hobby and special interests
    • Venturing: Youth development program for young men and women who are ages 14-20
  • Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline Expand Collapse

    For almost 100 years Girl Scouts have been helping girls discover their self potential. Did you know that 70 percent of women in the U.S. Congress were Girl Scouts? They’re not alone. About 69 percent of female executives and leaders have participated in Girl Scouts.

    Girl Scouts has age-appropriate programs that meet the needs of today’s girls from kindergarten to 12th grade. The model is based on three principles:

    • Girls discover their world and their own potential and strengthen their values
    • Girls connect with others through caring relationships and team building
    • Girls become empowered to take action and be advocates for themselves and others

    Muddy Squirrel is your gateway to outdoor adventure. If you would like to start trail running, mountain biking, orienteering, or even shooting, they have the tools you’ll need in a fun, risk-free environment. Muddy Squirrel offers women’s only events, guided trips, kids’ birthday parties, and corporate team-building.

  • River Rock Youth Climbing Programs Expand Collapse

    The River Rock Climbing Gym has multiple youth programs, clubs, and activities throughout the year. Some of these clubs include Parent;s Night Out, Member Kids Club (ages 5+), Youth Club, and a Youth Competitive Team.

  • Roanoke Slackline Expand Collapse

    Roanoke Slackline is a group with a mission to share the joy of slacklining in public spaces. The group is based on a set of simple ideas:

    • Community
    • Movement
    • Balance
    • Nature
    • Time spent outside

    There’s no formal process to become part of the slacklining group. Gatherings and information are posted in a Facebook group for members. Here’s what the page has to say: “Please join us in sharing time on the slackline in public space in and around the Roanoke Valley. People of all ages, and walks of life are welcome.”

    Plus current members already have a few slacklines that everyone can use, so don’t worry about having to bring one if you don’t have one. All levels are welcome. Come learn, come teach, come slack!

  • Roanoke Star Cycling Expand Collapse

    Roanoke Star Cycling is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to youth cycling. The organization believes that mountain biking is one of the most effective ways to promote a healthy lifestyle, encourage a love for the outdoors, and teach kids important lessons in sportsmanship, self-reliance, and determination. We welcome and encourage riders of all skill levels to share our love for the sport and for our Blue Ridge Mountains. Our coaches and volunteers teach mountain bike skills and ride with the kids weekly. We have JV and varsity competition teams, groups for just riding, and a gravity specific team.
