The Upper James River Water Trail
The mighty James River begins its majestic journey in Botetourt County and winds its way through the Blue Ridge Mountains on its way to the sea. The unspoiled beauty of the river is more accessible than ever through the Upper James River Water Trail. Paddlers, anglers and families can get back to nature and enjoy the sights and sounds of the Upper James including 14 pristine miles designated as a Virginia Scenic River.

Fish Virginia First
Fish Virginia First is a regional fishing trail initiative. Virginia is abundant with fisheries and has a tourism infrastructure that can accommodate and sustain visitation. Fish Virginia First promotes fisheries and other amenities such as lodging, restaurants, shopping, and outfitters. Whether you prefer to bass or fly fish, the fisheries in Roanoke are premier.

Trout In The Classroom
Trout in the Classroom (TIC) is an environmental education program in which students in grades k-12 raise trout from eggs to fry, monitor tank water quality, engage in stream habitat study, learn to appreciate water resources, begin to foster a conservation ethic, and grow to understand ecosystems. During the year each teacher tailors the program to fit his or her curricular needs. TIC has interdisciplinary applications in science, social studies, mathematics, language arts, fine arts, and physical education. Learn how to get your classroom involved.

Stream Restoration Program
Virginia's Wildlife Action Plan identified 925 species of wildlife as rare or at-risk. Over half (465) of those species are aquatic or have aquatic life stages. The most abundant habitat for these species is Virginia's rivers, creeks, and streams. To protect and restore biological diversity, the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) is providing financial and technical assistance to landowners through the Landowner Incentive Program (LIP).

RIDE Solutions
RIDE Solutions is a regional ridesharing program operated by the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission in cooperation with the New River Valley Planning District Commission. It is a grant-funded program that provides FREE carpool matching services for citizens of the Roanoke and New River Valley regions and surrounding areas within southwestern Virginia. We work with individuals to facilitate one-on-one carpool matches, and with employers to create company-wide alternative transportation programs.

Pathfinders For Greenways
Pathfinders for Greenways was incorporated in 1997 to be a non–profit organization to involve citizens in greenways. Pathfinders provides a forum for involvement of volunteers, coordination of work days, greenway promotional events, and fund raising. Pathfinders promotes and encourages development of a greenway network in the Roanoke Valley, educates citizens and officials on greenway benefits and value, raises and receives gifts, donations and grants for greenways, and organizes volunteers to assist with greenway development and maintenance.

CNR2030 – Growing a Carbon Neutral Region
CNR2030 is about uniting people, organizations, and businesses in the Roanoke and New River Valleys to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. This group recognizes that in order to attract the kinds of businesses that will thrive in a new energy economy and provide exciting and expanding job opportunities for its citizens, the region needs to commit to exceptional performance in carbon reduction and with it, a dedication to the creative individuals, businesses, and organizations that will drive that performance.
