Going Green!

Save A Ton

Protecting our natural resources and abundant natural beauty in the region is one of the reasons the Save-a-Ton program encouraged citizens to cut their energy use.   Going green doesn’t have to stop once you walk out your front door.  Here are some simple ways you can enjoy the outdoors while also being environmentally friendly.

  1. When you go camping, don't pay for energy at home that you aren't using. Before you head out the door, take some simple steps -- such as turning your water heater to vacation mode, plugging your electronics into a power strip and turning it off, closing your window blinds and setting your AC thermostat to 80+.
  2. Consider an Eco-Tour Vacation.  Ecotourism and adventure travel are among the fastest growing segments in tourism. From small carbon neutral planes that whisk you away to remote destinations, to solar panels that power everything from ceiling fans to pool filters, these tours have considered it all.  Ecotourism options can take travelers to sensitive natural areas by conserving the environment and minimizing the impact on these areas and the people who live there.
  3. Solar camping gear is an ideal solution for those who love camping as much as they love the comfort offered by modern electrical gadgets. This means that even though you might actually escape in the wilderness and enjoy nature you will still have the ability to charge your phone and iPod and other devices with the help of solar powered backpack.  And the light of a solar powered lantern will allow you to read and maneuver in your tent at night.
  4. Support sustainable access to mountain biking trails through organizations like the Wilderness Recreation Partnership and International Mountain Biking Association.  IMBA advocates for the best in mountain biking by encouraging low-impact riding, volunteer trailwork participation, cooperation among different trail user groups, grassroots advocacy and innovative trail management solutions.
  5. Pedal power has gotten more sustainable thanks to the engineering ingenuity of Calfee Design and the techniques they use to produce their Bamboo Bike,  I know what you’re thinking, Bamboo may be good for flooring, cutting boards, or bowls, but how successful is it being put to use as a high-tech piece of sports equipment, and while the $2500+ price tag may be high for the everyday biker, it costs a lot less than less sustainable carbon-fiber bikes that start at $13,000.
