Catawba’s Murder Hole Cave Featured in Film

The beautiful and dangerous Catawba Murder Hole Cave is the subject of a new documentary that was produced locally. The first screening of “Murder Hole” is Sept. 21 at the Grandin Theatre. Murder Hole Cave in Botetourt County is an infamous wild cave on the property of Dan and Marian McConnell. It is the subject of a book published in 2012 by the National Speleological Society. The cave is on private property and not generally accessible, but this film gives you a chance to explore it.

This documentary is a companion to the book, and includes drone footage above the cave entrance, 1988 footage of a visit into the cave, an interview with the daughter of George von Kromer, who photographed the cave in the early 1900s, and more. Through amazing videos and photographs, you will accompany the cavers as they descend into the depths of this beautiful underground world.

The 28-minute film was directed by David Socky and Marian McConnell. The showing is free.
