2nd Conquer the Cove Trail 25k & Marathon

Event image Time: 6:30 AM - 2:00 PM Location: Carvin's Cove June 3rd, 2012; 6:30am Start
Race Headquarters at Loch Haven Lake

We are happy to bring you, for the 2nd year in a row, the Roanoke Valley's first trail marathon. We plan to make this an event you won't forget. This is the anchor event to the Roanoke Non Ultra Trail Series (RNUTS) and it has it all; great challenging course, beautiful venue, great aide stations and post race food, and a relaxing atmosphere to hang out in after the race..

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is the place to run and ride if you are in Roanoke. It is the second largest municipal park in the nation. It holds not only a major water source within its 12,700 acres, but also overflowing recreation opportunities. There is approximately 40 miles of roads and trails in the park and with the newly accepted trail plan there should be miles and miles of new trails added each year.

Both race distances will be challenging. There will be a lot of climbing, approximately 3500ft of elevation gain in the marathon. 1000ft of this will occur following mile 18, but your reward will be 2.35 miles of downhill followed by a relatively easy 2 miles to the finish.

This event will be headquartered at Loch Haven Lake. Property rules state that there will be No Dogs Allowed on the property for this event.

Training for the races: Loch Haven is a private membership club. See info to the right for where to park for your training runs.

Marathon Course Description (3504ft of elevation gain): There will be a Marathon Time Limit of 7 hours. Runners must reach the AS #6 (18.02 miles) within 4 hours 15 minutes to continue on to the finish.
For those of you looking for the last step before trying an Ultra Marathon, this is it. You will get everything an Ultra has in 5 less miles. This course should give you the challenge, mentally and physically, that you need to be able to finish a 50k.

*Initial Water Stop Plan
Runners will leave Loch Haven Lake and run onto Timberview Road heading to the Cove. At the end of Tiimberview runners will go around the gate and then take a left onto the Trough. This is a 1.11 mile steep climb. This will bring you to the Brushy Mountain Fireroad. Here you will take a left for .4 miles to Buck which is on your right (AS #1 - 2.86 Miles). Buck starts out as a steep rocky downhill and then rolls for a total of 1.24 miles. At this point you will take a right onto Hotel for 1.13 miles. At the next trail intersection you will take a right onto Hi-Dee-Hoe for .3 miles until you veer left onto the 4 Gorge Trail. This is a 2.67 mile rolling up and down trail. The end will bring you back to a lower section of the Brushy Mtn. Fireroad (AS #2 - 7.93 Miles). Here you will take a left and head down for .48 miles to the bottom and then take a right and stay on the Happy Valley Road (HVR) for .19 miles until you get to Songbird which will be on your left. Songbird starts out as a climb and then rolls up and down for the remainder of this fast and flowy trail. At the 1.83 mile mark Songbird comes to a gravel road. Continue straight on songbird for the remaining .26 miles. This will take you to (AS #3 - 10.8 Miles) at HVR. From here head left .11 miles to the entrance of Arrowhead on your left. This trail starts out as a climb and then continues as an up and down trail with 4 creek crossings. The last section is one of my favorites as it follows the creek. At the end you will again come to HVR. Here you will take a left and stay on the road for 1.03 miles until you come to Schoolhouse on your right (AS #4- 13.53 Miles). This is a rolling 1.82 mile trail with couple of creek crossings. You will again come to HVR where you will continue across onto the pine needle covered Little Bell for .3 miles. At the end you will reach HVR again, you will take a right and then a quick left onto Enchanted Forest. You will run this very scenic Pine Forested trail for .44 miles to where it has been rerouted to the HVR (AS #5 - 15.98 Miles) take a left and continue on HVR for .13 miles where you will take a left back on to the single track trail of Enchanted Forest for another .46 miles to the 4-way intersection. Here you will take a right onto a .76 mile section of Comet. This will take you back to HVF where you will take a left onto a section you were on earlier for .1 miles. Here you will take a left and start climbing the Brushy Mtn. Fireroad for 2.89 miles. A half mile into the climb you will reach (AS #6 - 18.02 Miles). From here you will most likely question your sanity for entering this race at least once or twice. At the top you will continue downhill on the fireroad for another .64 miles to Gauntlet (AS #7 - 21.35 Miles). This is a 2.1 mile fast descent that will have you ready for a flat stretch of trail. At the bottom you will take a right onto Horse Pen for 1.25 mile. Horse Pen is a an old access road that will take you to the gate that you came to at the start of the race. Go around the gate and then continue on Timberview Road until you reach the entrance trail back into Loch Haven Lake.

25k Course Description:

For those of you looking for the last step before trying a Trail Marathon, this is it. This course should give you the challenge, mentally and physically, that you need to be able confidently enter a road or trail marathon.

*Initial Water Stop Plan
Runners will leave Loch Haven Lake and run onto Timberview Road heading to the Cove. At the end of Timberview runners will go around the gate and then take a left onto the Trough. This is a 1.11 mile steep climb. This will bring you to the Brushy Mountain fireroad. Here you will take a left for .4 miles to Buck which is on your right (AS #1 - 2.86 Miles). Big Lick Beertopia

Event image Time: 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM Location: Lewis Gale Field - Salem What could make a baseball stadium cooler? Line the outfield walls with breweries and have live bands playing from a stage on second base. No, this isn't the dream of college guys everywhere -- this is Big Lick Brewtopia.

The Roanoke Jaycees, a community service and leadership development organization for young professionals, and the Salem Red Sox have teamed up to host this new beer festival.

Brewtopia is the brainchild of project chairman Zak Moore and other Roanoke Jaycees who enjoy craft beers. "We decided it's different enough, we think it might work," Moore said. "Roanoke has tons of wine festivals and events, but only one [other] actual beer festival."

Twenty plus national and regional breweries will be represented for those 21 and older to enjoy throughout the day. Some of the regional breweries represented include Big Daddy's, Starr Hill, Foggy Ridge Cider, The River Co. and Roanoke Railhouse.

Live entertainment, and food will be available for purchase and provided by the Salem Red Sox. In case of rain, the festival will be moved under the covered concourse of the stadium. Blankets may be brought and placed on the field for sitting, but no chairs will be permitted.

Run With Grace

Event image Time: 8:00 AM - 10:00 AM Location: Patrick Henry High School Grace Lovegrove brought joy and irrepressibility to whatever she did, whether acting as church counselor for young kids, pitching for her recreational softball team, running cross country, or playing with her brother, Spencer. She found something to smile or laugh about even in down times. In January 2005,Grace had almost finished an “easy” 10-mile practice run with an indoor track teammate on her first day back from Christmas break when she collapsed in the street from what would later be identified as sudden cardiac arrest caused by an unexplained electrical problem. Emergency room doctors and nurses restored a heartbeat and blood pressure, but Grace died two days later on January 12, 2005. She was just 18.

Grace often thought of others, and from a relatively early age had vowed to be an organ donor if possible, an idea planted and encouraged by her mother. Four Virginians received her kidneys, liver, and pancreas.

RUN WITH GRACE is a 5K, and 1 mile fun run/walk that celebrates Grace's life.

Beauty Beneath the Dirt

Event image Time: 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM Location: Shadowbox Theater We all dream of leaving our lives for some big adventure. But if we did ... would it be worth the risk?

An Appalachian Trail thru-hike takes ambitious hikers on a 2,178.3-mile adventure from Georgia to Maine, trekking through some of America's most pristine state and national parks. Though many people have attempted this challenge over the years, only a small fraction actually complete the journey. Nevertheless, "The Traveling Circus," led by 24-yr-old lawyer, Katherine Imp, attempted the Appalachian Trail thru-hike from March to August 2010. Kate was joined by her brother Brandon, a 21-yr-old Ivy grad fresh out of college, and her best friend Emily, a 23-yr-old "city chick" born and raised on Chicago's South Side.

By capturing the highs and lows of trail life, this honest, touching, and very personal story paints a raw and uncensored picture of how long-distance hiking can affect the mind, body, and soul. Leaving its audience both satisfied and hungry for more, Beauty Beneath the Dirt is a one-of-a-kind documentary that cannot be missed.

Carvins Cove Trail Building

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Bennett Springs Parking Lot The primary focus of these work days will be the continued construction of the "Four Gorge Extension Trail".

We are putting the finishing touches on the Four Gorge Extension. While the trail is roughed in near the end, we still have some work to do before we move on to another project. Please continue to help during the final stages of this project. After this project we will likely work on fixing up some sections of existing trails.

We meet at the big parking lot on the Bennett Springs side of Carvin's Cove. Please be ready to carpool to the work site at 9am. We work until 1pm. We usually have a smaller group that stays on to work a little longer. But we make sure we get the people that want to leave at 1pm carpooled back to their cars.

We provide all the tools, and have some snacks and drinks. Wear sturdy shoes. Eye protection and gloves encouraged.

Please look at our calendar at www.greenways.org for the latest trail work updates.

This site is also where you can tell you friends to sign up to volunteer and where you can look at the database to see how many hours you and your friends have volunteered.

Also if you know anyone that would like to donate to our equipment fund, if we had more equipment, we could build and maintain trails faster. It also cost us a lot to maintain the equipment, for instance we just purchased new tracks for our mini trail dozer and that cost over $500. If we had two or those trail machines we could have one person roughing in the trail while another did much better finishing work and that would cut back on the amount of hand finishing that would need to be done.

Eastern Divide Ultra Marathon

Event image Time: 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM Location: Mountain Lake Limited to 200 runners:

It has been our dream to host a trail ultra. We are lucky enough to have a large and diverse amount of forest lands only a few miles outside of town and we want you to experience it! On top of that, we have many trails above 4000’. That may not be high to the folks out west, but in VA that is enough to cut the summer heat by 10 to 15 degrees and give us a great summer hideout. The trails and forest roads of the Mountain Lake area meander in and out of both the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico drainages, thus the name Eastern Divide Ultra.

The Eastern Divide Ultra 50K will be a point-to-point foot race. Starting at the Cascades Trailhead just outside of Pembroke, Virginia. The race will trace its way over and around Salt Pond Mountain before concluding at The Mountain Lake Conservancy.

The pre-race meeting, dinner and Finish will be held at The Mountain Lake Conservancy and Hotel situated on top of Salt Pond Mountain, west of Blacksburg VA.
