5th Trail Nut 10k and Half Marathon Trail Races

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Bedford’s Falling Creek Park 5th Trail Nut 10k and Half Marathon
May 5th, 2012 at 9:00am

About the race
This park is one of Bedford’s little known treasures. I was first introduced to the park during one of the Virginia Derailer mountain bike races. Since then I have been amazed at how the park continually changes. It is a family park, with a playground, pavilions, paved path, Frisbee golf, fitness circuit, shuffle board, bird watching trails, mountain bike trails, and pump track (get maps and trail info at Bedford Trails).
It is loaded with over 9 miles of intermediate rolling, twisty, single track in a beautiful wooded setting. It isn’t uncommon to see wildlife during one of your trips to the park (turtles, raccoons, rabbits, ground hogs, the occasional skunk, and deer).

Course Description
The 10k will be one lap on the park’s rolling single track trails with a water/Gatorade stop at the 3.5 mile mark. The half marathon will do the 10k course and then continue on, on a longer and slightly different 7 mile loop with water stops at 3.5, 6.2, 9.7 mile marks. The race is 90% trail, 9% grassy fields, and 1% gravel road.

Middle Mountain Momma Mtn. Bike Race

Event image Time: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Location: Douthat State Park A lovely trout-stuffed pay-to-fish lake lies nestled in the valley formed by Beard’s Gap and Middle Mountains, but it’s up the sides of the slopes where you'll find the real beauty of Douthat State Park. For instance, note the profound web of New Deal singletrack trails, circa 1936, that lace the slopes on both sides of the pond. We like to refer to this area as something near to mountain bike Disneyland.

The course provides mass-quantities of singletrack--and--it's almost entirely unduplicated trail! There's so much singletrack you might actually seek something wider after a while. Moreover, about the only non-singletrack sections of the 21-mile-one-lap race are the short start road, a few yards of asphalt, and that is it. And not only is it singletrack, it’s freaking majestic singletrack.

If you raced any edition on this legendary course, you know what we mean. God bless Franklin Delano Roosevelt and New Deals everywhere.

The XXC course - a trail Odyssey. Double XC'ers leave the state park and traipse across the coolest big-ring pedal-assist slight downhill on the Middle Mountain Ridge--all the way--to route 125. Then, take a quick lasso-loop on ancient CCC, blueberry bush-infested trails of Brushy Ridge, and then you'll know that not many people have pedaled through there before! Later, after climbing route 125 again for a 4 mile ascent (capped with a 1/2 mile trail up Middle Mountain's backside that burns-baby-burns), you rejoin the 21 mile XC loop, making the best course on the planet 10 steps better.

Carvins Cove Trail Building

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Bennett Springs Parking Lot The primary focus of these work days will be the continued construction of the "Four Gorge Extension Trail".

We meet at the big parking lot on the Bennett Springs side of Carvin's Cove. Please be ready to carpool to the work site at 9am. We work until 1pm. We usually have a smaller group that stays on to work a little longer. But we make sure we get the people that want to leave at 1pm carpooled back to their cars.

We provide all the tools, and have some snacks and drinks. Wear sturdy shoes. Eye protection and gloves encouraged.

Please look at our calendar at www.greenways.org for the latest trail work updates.

This site is also where you can tell you friends to sign up to volunteer and where you can look at the database to see how many hours you and your friends have volunteered.

Also if you know anyone that would like to donate to our equipment fund, if we had more equipment, we could build and maintain trails faster. It also cost us a lot to maintain the equipment, for instance we just purchased new tracks for our mini trail dozer and that cost over $500. If we had two or those trail machines we could have one person roughing in the trail while another did much better finishing work and that would cut back on the amount of hand finishing that would need to be done.
