Vibram BirdieBash

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM Location: Greenfield Disc Golf Course The VBB is great for beginners (a relaxed, fun, low pressure disc golf outing) and seasoned players (a chance to have fun competing, with a chance to go to the national VBB Championships!) We estimate round one will take 1.5 to 2 hours, allow 1 hour for lunch and another 1.5 to 2 hours for round 2. If the event starts at 10 AM, it will probably be done around 3:00 PM or so.

It's a two disc, two round tournament where we only count success. Everyone throws one shot less than par. Eagles are five points, birdies are two, and metal hits are one. If no one scores on a hole, the CTP after final throw gets a point.

Registration for both events is $30 and includes:
Two Rounds
Two Vibram discs
One Shirt (S-XXXL)

Prizes:
Three Champions Discs (top scoring man, woman and junior)
One Spirit Award Disc
2nd Round Card Prize: A VBB Sling Backpack
CTPs Galore

Scoring is as follows:
Ace/Eagle: 5 points
Birdie: 2 points
Metal Hit: 1 point
New for 2015: If no points are scored on a hole, the closest to the pin after two throws earns a point.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation GREAT STRIDES

Time: 9:30 AM - 12:00 PM Location: Hollins University Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's largest national fundraising event. Each year, more than 125,000 people participate in hundreds of walks across the country to raise funds for cystic fibrosis research and drug development.

Great Strides continues to gain momentum, as do our research efforts and the progress we’ve made in the search for a cure. The CF Foundation has raised and invested hundreds of millions of dollars to support the development of new CF drugs and therapies. But the lives of people with this disease are still cut far too short. We need the public’s continued support to fulfill our mission of finding a cure and improving the quality of life of those with the disease.

Walks are held at nearly 600 locations nationwide and are open to the public. Great Strides provides a fantastic opportunity for family, friends, students, co-workers and colleagues to come together in support of a worthy cause.

Walk in Great Strides today and help add tomorrows to the lives of those living with cystic fibrosis. Donations encouraged.

Appalachian Power Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM Location: Smith Mountain Lake State Park The Smith Mountain Lake Triathlon is the first open water swim triathlon in the western part of the state. The swim starts and finishes at the State Parks well groomed swimming beach. The bike is 20K and rolling throughout. The run course is all inside the park and is a nice flat to rolling out and back affair. Definitely a nice event to add to your early season schedule.

This event benefits Virginia Amateur Sports and the ALS Foundation. Virginia Amateur Sports, a Roanoke based non-profit group works to promote access to sporting events of all kinds to Virginia residents. Please consider making a donation to this worthy cause during the registration process.

Longtime Roanoke resident and triathlete Dick Kelley passed away in 2009 after a battle with ALS. If you would like to make a donation to the cause you can do so when you register

Conquer the Cove 35K and Marathon

Event image Time: 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM Location: Carvins Cove - Loch Haven Lake This is a great event. If you are from Roanoke it gives you a chance to compete against the home town folks to see who's top dog. If you aren't from Roanoke it gives you the chance to see 80% of the trails of the park that will be well marked and maintained. This is the anchor event to the Roanoke Non Ultra Trail Series (RNUTS) and it has it all; great challenging course, beautiful venue, great aide stations and post race food, and a relaxing atmosphere to hang out in after the race.

Carvins Cove Natural Reserve is the place to run and ride if you are in Roanoke. It is the second largest municipal park in the nation. It holds not only a major water source within its 12,700 acres, but also overflowing recreation opportunities. There is approximately 40 miles of roads and trails in the park and with the newly accepted trail plan there should be miles and miles of new trails added each year.

Both race distances will be challenging. There will be a lot of climbing, approximately 3500ft of elevation gain in the marathon. 1000ft of this will occur following mile 18, but your reward will be 2.35 miles of downhill followed by a relatively easy 2 miles to the finish.
