Big Lick Hash House (Weekly Hash Run)

Event image Time: 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM Location: Varies Week to Week If it is possible to offend you in any way...DO NOT ATTEND THIS EVENT. Most hash clubs lovingly refer to themselves as, "A Drinking Club with a Running Problem," but their weekly runs also tend to include nudity (don't get too excited...male nudity is more common), offensive language and songs, and semi-mandatory drinking stops. That being said...it's also a heck of a good time!!

If you're into that kind of thing then join the wierdos and crazy people of Roanoke every Saturday at 5:30pm. A "hash run" is a group running event where one leader (hare) takes off before the rest of the group, leaving white flour & chalk marks to guide them. The hare doesn't want to get caught, so he/she will try to slow down the group by leaving several "bad" trails at intersections, sending them down rivers, or leaving song & beer checks.

Each week they explore a new location (and sometimes change times), so check their facebook page to find out details where the "hash" details are posted weekly. The hash typically costs $5 but post run food & beverages are provided. Questions call Keith at 540-309-6562

Life-Guard 5K Rotor Run

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM Location: Rivers Edge Park

Carilion Clinic Life-Guard is hosting the First Annual Life-Guard 5K Rotor Run on Saturday, July 11 in Roanoke, VA. This event is designed not only to promote health and wellness within the community we serve, but also to raise awareness on the important service provided by Emergency Medical Services, both air and ground. At the “finish line,” we will have one of our very own Life-Guard helicopters on display as well as local volunteer Fire-EMS vehicles. This will give the public a unique opportunity to learn about these services directly from Fire-EMS providers, pilots, flight paramedics, and flight nurses.

Proceeds from the event will support a Jefferson College of Health Sciences scholarship benefiting a nursing and / or paramedic student pursuing a future career in Flight Medicine. As a private not-for-profit institution, Jefferson College’s tuition is sometimes outside of the reach of students interested in a promising career in healthcare. The Rotor Run is designed to raise funds for students with financial need AND a passion for flight medicine. The Life-Guard flight crew is excited with this opportunity to “give back” and to support their “future” providers!

The run begins at 0900 with the walk to follow immediately after. Both individual and team participants are welcome with awards for the top male and female runners and top team. Participants are also permitted to bring their dogs with them for the race!

The 11th annual “Horse and Hound” Wine Festival

Event image Time: 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM Location: of Johnson’s Orchards & Peaks of Otter Winery Enjoy wine from some of Virginia’s finest wineries while listening to good music and visiting art, craft and food vendors. Virginia’s most unique wine festival has numerous events throughout the day with horses and dogs as the primary attractions such as the Parade of Horses, lure course and muskrat racing. Families will enjoy this festival because it appeals to both young and old and we have a Kiddie Korral.

Patriotic Opening: At noon we will have our Patriotic Opening with the presentation of flags on horseback, pledges and anthems.
This is a very impressive event.

Lure Coursing: There will be a demonstration of Lure Coursing given by Laura Cormier. Lure coursing is a humane sport which recreates the chase of the hare by the pursuing hound. The "bunny" consists of strips of white plastic attached to a continuous loop line that runs through a
series of pulleys to simulate the zigzag path of a rabbit on the run

Muskrat Races: This event uses the Jack Russell Terrier's highly developed prey drive to swim through water in pursuit of an artificial lure.
Dogs of all shapes and sizes are invited to swim across the pond in pursuit of an artificial lure. There will be three divisions of competition: small, medium, and large dogs. The winner in each division will receive a trophy

Parade of Horses: Provided and directed by Reba Farm Inn and Saddle Soar Equitainment. The Horse parade will continue to be a crowd pleaser with a wide variety of horses to be exhibited. In addition there will be new and exciting events such as: featured wild horses from the herd on the outer banks, N.C. and a Chincoteaque pony from Virginia’s Assateaque Island.

Kiddie Korral: Supervised activities for children simulating rodeo games and quiet games as well throughout the day. Supervision by the staff and volunteers of Brook Hill Farm Rehabilitation and Rescue

Part of the proceeds will benefit 501-3c organizations that benefit horses and dogs.

Friday Night Lights Moonlight Madness Mtn. Bike & Trail Run

Event image Time: 9:00 PM - 11:59 PM Location: Montvale Park Darkness, the absence of visible light, has had to endure the stigma of being uninviting, eerie and at times evil. This July Mountain Junkies will dispel those antiquated notions and prove once and for all it is FUN to play in the dark!

Friday Night Lights Blue Moon Madness has everything a trail junkie could want with a 25K mountain bike race starting at 9:00 p.m. followed by a 12K trail running race starting at 11:59 p.m. on the highly acclaimed trails of Montvale Park in lovely Montvale, Va.

If you have ever raced in Montvale before, either for the Montvale 5&10 milers or the Throwdown in Tanktown, forget everything you know about the race course…the darkness by itself would make it totally different but when you turn it around and add a never before raced on trail, you are in for a totally different experience.

Oh, by the way, there’ll be a full moon, a blue moon, on race weekend but you better bring your lights too…the only way to completely break the darkness is to add Friday Night Lights.
