County of Bath Middle Mountain Momma Mtn. Bike Race

Event image Time: 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM Location: Douthat State Park The course provides mass-quantities of singletrack--and--it's almost entirely unduplicated trail! There's so much singletrack you might actually seek something wider after a while. Moreover, about the only non-singletrack sections of the 21-mile-one-lap race are the short start road, a few yards of asphalt, and that is it. And not only is it singletrack, it’s freaking majestic singletrack.

If you raced any edition on this legendary course, you know what we mean. God bless Franklin Delano Roosevelt and New Deals everywhere.

The XXC course is back of course--a trail Odyssey. Double XC'ers leave the state park and traipse across the coolest big-ring pedal-assist slight downhill on the Middle Mountain Ridge--all the way--to route 125. Then, take a quick lasso-loop on ancient CCC, blueberry bush-infested trails of Brushy Ridge, and then you'll know that not many people have pedaled through there before! Later, after climbing route 125 again for a 4 mile ascent (capped with a 1/2 mile trail up Middle Mountain's backside that burns-baby-burns), you rejoin the 21 mile XC loop, making the best course on the planet 10 steps better.

Big Lick Fat Cat Classic

Event image Time: 5:30 PM - 9:00 PM Location: All over Roanoke The Most Fun You’ll Ever Have On Two Wheels!

What do you get when you cross an Alley Cat race with a team time trial, and throw in a scavenger hunt to boot? The Big Lick Fat Cat Classic combines all of these elements to create the most entertaining and challenging cycling event in Roanoke Valley history. Join us at 6:00 PM on Friday, May 17th for the most fun you’ll ever have on two wheels.

2013 marks the third annual running of the Big Lick Fat Cat Classic. The inaugural event attracted 20 riders through nothing more than word of mouth and a Facebook post. Cyclists of every stripe took part, from bike commuters to spandex-clad roadies, and urban hipsters to aging hippies. The 2012 edition featured a larger field and a revised format, and for 2013 we’re changing things up again with the introduction of a team competition and a variety of new checkpoints and challenges.

It’s been said that age and treachery will overcome youth and skill. This race won’t be won by the team that rides the farthest or the fastest, but by the one that combines speed, strategy and navigation skills to rack up the highest point total without exceeding the 3 hour time limit. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, you won’t want to miss the 2013 Big Lick Fat Cat Classic.

Trail Work at Carvins Cove

Event image Time: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM Location: Carvins Cove - Bennett Springs lot Trail Volunteers,

Come help repair some muddy spots on the trails at Carvins Cove this Saturday May 18th.

We will be working from 9am to 1pm (maybe later for those that can stay). You can come late or leave early if you can get yourself to the the section of Tuck-a-way between the 4 way intersection with Comet and the Enchanted Forest (that is where we will start, but may move to Song Bird after that).

Also as an ongoing process, please let us know when you would like to help out. We would sure like to hear from more of you. Let us know what trails you would like work done on also to help us prioritize the work.
Pick your weekend day and time for trail work. If we can get at least two people for the same day and time frame, we will likely make that an official work day and post on the calendar.

Please send email to volunteers@greenways.org to pick your suggested workday.

Then watch the calendar for other work days and times you might want to show up for. Just check the calendar before heading out there if the weather is questionable.
Go to Greenways.org/calendar.asp .

We meet at big parking lot on Bennett Springs side of Carvins Cove ready to carpool to work site.

We usually try to work at least 4 hours, but we will sometimes stay longer if some want to and we work to get anyone back to their cars if they need to leave.

Pathfinders for Greenways provides all the tools and Roanoke IMBA is providing snacks and drinks. Eye protection, sturdy shoes and gloves encouraged.

Pathfinder for Greenways is the only volunteer group at this time authorized to lead trail work at Carvins Cove, please pass the word to not build unauthorized trails as it jeopardizes the public use of this watershed among many other issues!

Be sure to check Greenways.org/calendar.asp before heading out to see if workday is canceled for any reason.
