Roanoke Zombie 5k

Event image Time: 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM Location: Roanoke County's Green Hill Park Western Virginia Regional Jail, in cooperation with Roanoke County Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, with media support from Fox 21/27 and The CW5, present “Roanoke Zombie 5k” at Roanoke County’s Green Hill Park. The Race begins at 10 AM and is a fund-raiser for Special Olympics Virginia and all net proceeds will go directly to them! Special Olympics Virginia provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in an Olympic setting for individuals with disabilities in 14 different sports arenas. More importantly, Special Olympics is about people. It is helping create a world of respect, inclusion and unity.

Zombie Run is a 5K obstacle fun run for the end of times. But you’re not just running against the clock you are running from flesh-eating, virus-spreading, bloody zombies. Participants will use speed, agility, and their intact brains to overcome obstacles and avoid flesh-eating Zombies. Before the race, you will be given a flag belt. These flags represent your health. The zombies want to take your flags and maybe eat your brains. If you lose all your health flags, you die. And the zombies win.
Throughout the 5K run, there will be a series of man-made and natural obstacles for you to complete. There will be zombies. Their job is to chase you and eat you — but mainly go after your health, in the form of your flag belt. Avoid the zombies to keep your health flags. Use speed, strategy and your intact brains to make it to the FINISH LINE “alive” with at least ONE FLAG INTACT. If you finish with zero health flags, this means the zombies have successfully transformed you into the “undead”. There will be a start line, and a finish line, but what happens in between is up to you. Choose both your strategy and how you finish the race wisely or you might not make it to the end “alive”. If you “survive’ you will be entered into a drawing for some great prizes.
On-line registration ends October 2 and day of registration is by cash only. For more details and information on how to register visit www.RoanokeZombie5k.com or call (540) 387-6078 ext. 0 or Rachel Wylie at (540) 378-3775.

Forecasting “Wild” Blue Ridge Mountain Weather

Event image Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM Location: Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway Office, 4419 Pheasant Ridge Rd., Roanoke 24014 The guest speaker is David Still of BRPWeather.com, a division of RaysWeather.com.

Using information from 22 weather stations and 14 webcams installed along the Blue Ridge Parkway, BRPWeather.com provides seven-day forecasts for all 469 miles, with a point forecast for each weather station.

The meteorological operation touts reliable forecasts from the mountain to the foothills and the micro-climates in-between. The forecasts are based on “good data and local flavor.” They are derived manually, not by a computer model, and updated at least twice a day.

According to Still, the National Park Service uses the site to improve parkway safety, being alert to weather changes and adverse road conditions.

The event is open and free to the public.

A discussion about upcoming Friends of the Blue Ridge Parkway chapter events will follow, so please join us next Tuesday!

Wild Gear Chase

Event image Time: 1:00 PM - 5:30 PM Location: Roanoke GO Fest at River's Edge

This may be a Wild Gear Chase but don't worry, even if you're slow you'll catch some sweet stuff. From water bottles and hats to bikes and kayaks, and everything in between, everyone walks away with a piece of gear in this unique "treasure hunt".

Using a map, a corresponding "cue sheet", and your brains, participants have two hours to race to as many checkpoints (both urban and wilderness locations) scattered throughout a two-mile radius of GO Fest. Hit as many checkpoints as you can, then head back to the finish within the two-hour time limit. Racers are then ranked based on points and time, and line up in front of the gear tent. Every 30 seconds a person enters the gear tent; you can stay in the tent as long as you want but you can only leave the tent with one piece of gear, so choose wisely.

-Only a $20 entry fee
-1pm & 2pm start times (your choice)
-Food trucks, free live music and local craft beer all available at GO Fest for post race festivites

Blue Ridge Wildflower Society Meeting: Rehabilitating timbered forests and mining

Event image Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM Location: Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs Rehabilitating timbered forests and mining
sites to restore flying squirrelsCorinne “Cordie” Diggins, a PhD student at Virginia Tech, is working with Dr. W.
Mark Ford and the USGS Virginia Cooperative Fish
and Wildlife Research Unit. Her research focuses on
two subspecies of northern flying squirrel that occur
in the Appalachian Mountains: the recently delisted
Virginia Northern Flying Squirrel (G. s. fuscus) and the
Carolina Northern Flying Squirrel. These two subspe
-
cies inhabit high-elevation spruce-fir forests, which
are Pleistocene relicts from the last ice age. The
squirrels’ habitat has been reduced and degraded
by industrial logging and spruce decline in the 20th
century. Climate change is also a threat to this unique ecosystem, which occurs
on high-elevation peaks and ridgelines in the Blue Ridge Mountains and Allegheny
Mountains. Cordie will talk about habitat use and bioacoustics surveys of both
subspecies, which will help guide habitat management (e.g., spruce restoration)
within squirrel-occupied habitat.
