SCUBA is a popular summertime activity for those wishing to explore the great underwater environment of the Roanoke Region of Virginia. The local lakes and rivers of this area offer a plethora of diving opportunities from beginner to advanced and show aquatic lovers another dimension to their local world.

With more than 500 miles of shoreline, Smith Mountain Lake is the largest lake in Virginia offering ample opportunities for underwater exploration.
New River
The New River offers multiple dive sites with varying levels of difficulty.  The whirhole plunges to 78ft with plenty of catfish and interesting topography to keep a diver interested. An old train car discovered in 2010 by a local group of divers from Avalon Dive center sits in shallower water but contains an abundance of curious fish including rock bass, walleye, and large mouth bass who are always interested in following divers around. The most popular site on the New River is off the Pepper Ferry Bridge. The Peppers Ferry bridge hits a maximum depth of 43 feet so it is comfortable for beginner divers. An eddy current encompasses the dive site which makes diving there easy. The rock ledges, fallen trees, and huge fish population make this dive a must for residents of the area and lovers of the river.

This local lake is fun for shallow dives and finding treasures dropped by boaters and swimmers.
South Holston
South Holston is located outside of the SW Va area, but is a short drive for more advanced divers. It's maximum depth exceeds 160ft which allows for deep diver training. Two sunken ships lay at 60ft and a skeleton couple sit in lawn chairs under an umbrella at about 130ft so make sure to visit them if you happen to be diving there!
Guides and Services
