26.2 Miles Isn’t for Everyone, But the Star 10K Is

If America’s Toughest Road Marathon intimidates you, tackle a shorter distance while challenging yourself.

The Anthem Star 10K is one of the most popular races on Blue Ridge Marathon weekend, particularly among Roanoke Region residents. The 10K option includes all the thrills of race weekend, from running up Mill Mountain – one of the signature parts of the race – to taking part in the finish festival.

Don’t be fooled by the distance. The 10K option (6.2 miles) is still a challenge with 2,000 feet of elevation change. But with a little training, you’ll be ready before race day. (There are plenty of running groups in the region that will help you learn to love hills!)

The 10K course starts downtown, heads up Mill Mountain along Fishburn Parkway and to the iconic 90 foot Mill Mountain Star. (Stop and snap a selfie if you like.) Then prepare for the downhill as you head back to the finish line at Elmwood Park via the old toll road on the back side of the mountain.

The 10K is just one of a number of Blue Ridge Marathon races this year, including the new-for-2017 Official Double Marathon and 4-Person Relay options.

  • Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon: 26.2 miles of mountains, including 7,430 feet of elevation change
  • Half Marathon: 13.1 miles of mountains with, 3,790 feet of elevation change
  • Double Marathon: Two laps around America’s Toughest Road Marathon course – 52.4 miles – and it is sold out (watch for the double crew as they start Lap 2 with the rest of the pack)
  • 4-Person Relay: Team tackles the marathon course together
  • Anthem Star 10K: The popular option includes 6.2 miles up Mill Mountain and back down the old toll road
  • Carilion Children’s Family 1-Miler: A fun run for any ability or age that starts allows participants to cross the official Blue Ridge Marathon finish line
