Just because the weather has turned colder does not mean you can’t keep playing outside. Actually, the winter months are a great time to get out and try adventures from a new perspective.

But you need to stay warm doing it. Here are 10 tips to help you stay warm so you can play outside all winter:

  1. Dress in thin layers. Adjust clothing as needed when you are planning activities where you are likely to sweat – such as running or strenuous hiking.
  2. Drink warm liquids. (Or just plenty of water. It’s scientifically proven!)
  3. Make – and carry – your own hand warmers using this trick from Lifehacker: All you need is plastic bags, ice melt pellets, and water.
  4. Get moving! Plan an activity where you have to move around. Take advantage of your body’s natural warming.
  5. Don’t lounge around in the cold. When your adventure is over – particularly if you did sweat – head indoors and change clothes.
  6. Eat more. (Seriously!) Your body will burn extra calories trying to stay warm. Try snacks such as nuts or dried fruit to stay in peak condition.
  7. Stay dry. If you are out in the snow, replace damp layers regularly. Opt for form-fitting wicking clothing when it comes to base layers and waterproof shells. (Keep cotton in the middle since it absorbs moisture.)
  8. Carry replacement layers if you plan to be outside for a while. Keep a second pair of gloves in an interior coat pocket and switch pairs. (There’s nothing like switching to a warm, toasty pair.) You can try the same trick for hats and socks also!
  9. Don’t sit on the ground. Carry an insulated pack blanket to sit on.
  10. Get in the sun. (Just don’t forget the sunscreen.)
